About the role| Te tūranga mahi
As a Stevedore (starting as a Lasher), you’ll play a key role in keeping New Zealand’s supply chain moving in a job that keeps you active, fit and physically engaged every day.
This is a hands-on, physical role suited to people who enjoy working hard and staying fit on the job. You’ll secure containers on ships and work as part of a team to safely move cargo between ships, trains and trucks. Working outdoors in a 24/7 operation, you’ll face a variety of conditions including all weather, heights and confined spaces.
No prior experience as a Lasher is needed — full training is provided, along with the opportunity to build your skills, develop your fitness and grow a long-term career with Port of Auckland.
Your Stevedore career pathway:
We’ll support you every step of the way:
- 0–3 months: Training, onboarding, and supported shifts
- 3–12 months: Build confidence and capability in live operations
- 6-12+ months: Progress into machinery,(with the right demonstrated abilities and performance)
- 36+ months crane operations and foreperson/leadership roles

What we’re looking for from you | He aha tā mātou e kimi nei i a koe
- Strong commitment to health and safety
- Good level of physical fitness
- Ability to work rotating day/night shifts (7-day roster)
- Comfortable working at heights and in all weather
- Team player with a reliable, can-do attitude
- Full, Clean NZ Driver Licence required for progression (restricted accepted to start)
- Consent to police & pre-employment checks (if your application is progressed)
- You must be eligible to work in New Zealand by holding NZ Permanent Residency or Citizenship
Roster & hours:
- 7-day rotating roster (including weekends & public holidays)
- 8-to-12-hour guaranteed shifts (minimum 40 hours per week)
- Typical start times: 7:00am & 7:00pm (Day/Night shifts)
- Two consecutive days off each week
