General Practitioner – Dunedin

Te Kāika Health Service

Te Kāika invites applications for the position of General Practitioner to join its well-established, community-focused health service in Dunedin.

Te Kāika delivers holistic, integrated healthcare designed to improve outcomes for individuals, whānau, and the wider community. Our services extend beyond traditional general practice and include dental care, mental health support, outreach nursing, dietitian and nutrition services, alcohol and other drug support, and a range of wider social services.

This collaborative approach creates a unique practice environment where clinicians work closely across disciplines to provide accessible, culturally appropriate and equitable care.

The successful applicant will join a developing clinical team that includes a General Practitioner, Nurse Practitioner, and Nurse Prescriber, supported by a wider multidisciplinary workforce.

Purpose of the Role

The General Practitioner will provide competent, patient-centred and culturally appropriate care that addresses the health needs of individuals and whānau while promoting wellbeing.

The role works closely with the nursing team and wider multidisciplinary staff to provide clinical guidance, support and coordinated care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Provide high-quality general practice consultations for patients with a wide range of health needs

  • Take clinical histories, perform examinations, diagnose, treat and prescribe as appropriate

  • Promote preventative care and health education

  • Encourage ongoing clinical relationships with patients and whānau

  • Undertake minor procedures including suturing, skin lesion removal and toenail wedge resections

  • Perform cervical smears and sexual health assessments where required

  • Participate in GP phone triage and support development of triage systems within Te Kāika

  • Refer patients to appropriate medical, allied health or social care services

  • Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated care

Clinical Administration

  • Maintain high-quality clinical records using the patient management system (Medtech)

  • Complete referral letters, reports and relevant health forms including ACC and WellSouth documentation

  • Comply with Te Kāika policies, including charging policies and clinical standards

  • Liaise with the Practice Manager regarding leave, rosters and workloa

Teamwork and Professional Development

  • Maintain a personal professional development plan aligned with Medical Council of New Zealand requirements

  • Participate in continuing medical education and professional development

  • Support continuity of care for patients within a multidisciplinary model

  • Contribute to strengthening Te Kāika’s holistic model of care

Health & Safety

All staff are expected to:

  • Report incidents, injuries and hazards

  • Participate in Te Kāika health and safety systems

  • Support workplace safety and rehabilitation processes

Confidentiality

Due to the sensitive nature of healthcare services, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times is essential. All staff will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement upon commencement.

Skills, Experience & Attributes

Clinical Experience

  • Experience diagnosing and managing acute and chronic medical conditions

  • Ability to manage minor trauma and injuries

  • Confidence managing sexual health, reproductive health and general wellbeing issues

  • Experience supporting patients with mental health or behavioural health concerns

  • Ability to work with diverse communities in a culturally safe manner

Other Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage a varied workload

  • Commitment to a holistic, whānau-centred model of care

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be eligible for General or Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand

  • Hold, or be eligible to hold, a current Annual Practising Certificate

  • Be a Registered General Medical Practitioner in New Zealand
